High-efficient pump technology

Dresden / Dortmund. With modern high-efficient pump technology, the economic efficiency of a building can be increased to a considerable extent. This also applies for the reconstructed Dresden Frauenkirche (Our Lady’s Church), in which “Wilo-Stratos” high-efficiency pumps guarantee a power-saving operation since 2002. Opposite to it, there is the “Quarter of the Frauenkirche“ (QF 1). Since it has been finished in the end of 2006, numerous Wilo pumps are operating in the “QF 1”.

Considerable power-saving potentials could be opened up in both buildings by applying high-efficiency pumps. This results from the fact that, with regard to the pumps’ life cycle, the electricity costs represent the greatest part. Those can be considerably reduced with modern pump technology, thus relieving the operator’s budget and saving the environment at the same time.

This is why, for example, in the five heat circuits of the  Frauenkirche and in the ventilation devices in the cupola only „Wilo-Stratos“ high-efficiency pumps of the pump expert WILO AG from Dortmund are applied. The decisive factor for selecting the Wilo pumps were the electricity savings during the heating operation because in comparison to uncontrolled pumps, high-efficiency pumps consume up to 80 percent less power. In addition, each “Wilo-Stratos” pump has been dimensioned exactly according to the demands of the respective heating circuits. This is how overdimensioning of the pump has been avoided which would also unnecessarily increase energy consumption.

Wilo high-efficiency pumps fulfil highest demands
The “QF 1” made especially high demands to pump technology. The area of 17,000 square metres is divided into a hotel, shops, offices and flats. Here, more than fifty different Wilo pumps decisively contribute to highest energy efficiency and ensure the supply and disposal.

The main application area is the heating installation. It is structured in 35 heat circuits which are continuously equipped with “Wilo-Stratos” high-efficiency pumps. The heat circuit for the floor heating of the shopping arcade is quite special. A heat exchanger is interconnected, in which the fluid of the floor heating is warmed. At summer temperatures it can also be used for cooling. Then the system is supplied with cold by another heat exchanger.

In the main distributor of the heating installation there are, due to supply safety, two “Wilo-Stratos” double pumps, thus avoiding an interruption of the heat supply of the additionally switched on heat circuits in the case of a pump fault. The dimensioning of the pump’s flow rate is alternately achieved by one of the pumps, while the respective other pump is available as a stand-by pump. If one of the pumps has a fault, it is automatically switched over to the stand-by pump. At the same time the pump’s control electronics send a fault signal to the control centre, so that the fault is recognised and remedied as fast as possible.

High-efficiency also in secondary hot water supply
In secondary hot water supply energy-saving pump technology is also applied. A “Wilo-Comfort-Vario COR-4 MHIE 403/ VR” pressure boosting system is used, which provides all connected extraction points optimally with secondary hot water even in the case of great demand. The system consists of four “Wilo-Economy MHIE” high-pressure multistage centrifugal pumps, which are installed on a joint base frame. Each pump has an integrated frequency converter which controls the pumps’ speed according to the demand. The automatic control of the pressure boosting system is realised by means of the “Wilo-Comfort-Vario control VR”. One or more pumps are switched on or off according to the needs, whereas the fine control of the speed takes place via the frequency converter. Thereby the pumps’ performance is adjusted exactly to the currently predominant load condition, so that a high user convenience and, at the same time, also an energy-efficient operating mode is achieved.

“QF 1”: Modern combination of living, working and shopping
The “QF 1” was realised by the investors Arturo Prisco and Kai von Döring as well as the building services company Kondor Wessels. During the reconstruction of the Dresden Frauenkirche, the building of the adjacent construction around the Dresden Market started in 2002. This construction has also been destroyed by firebombing in World War II. The design statute for this area stipulates eight quarters whose extension orientates towards the former course of the street and the historical size of the parcel respectively.

One of these quarters is the “QF 1”. Nine individual buildings were built as a housing block construction on one foundation. The design of the façade orientates towards historical examples so that an impression of a grown construction is created. Living, working and shopping is possible within the building complex. Besides the luxury hotel, there are 38 exclusive flats and high-value office areas of about 3,000 m². In the courtyard a shopping arcade stretches across three floors, containing 40 shops and restaurants. It has a glass roof which enables a view of the Frauenkirche cupola.
